Ever wonder how high to hang your framed picture on your wall? Sometimes just eye-balling it is good enough but other times there’s a tricky piece of furniture nearby, or the art is smaller or larger than you’re used to working with. Here are some general guidelines to help. Plus the “magic” height number interior designers and art galleries use when hanging wall art.
All of us have probably heard that our wall art should be at eye level, but we’re all different heights so this is a loose guideline. The key to hitting the sweet spot when hanging wall art most every time is using “The 57 Rule” that interior designers and art galleries typically use. Make sure the center of your wall art is 57 to 60 inches from the floor and you’ll usually be right on target with your wall art.
There are some exceptions to this rule though, such as, when the wall art will be hung in a room with high ceilings, along a staircase, or above areas where there are seating arrangements. When hanging art in a room with extra high ceilings try hanging the art 67-70 inches from the floor. If this still doesn’t feel right try moving the wall art up another 5-10 inches. When hanging frames along a staircase you will either want to hang the frame at the same height as your railing or 57 inches from above each step. If artwork is positioned where someone’s head will bump against artwork while seated then it’s better to adjust the art so it won’t be at head level.
How high or low you frame your art should ultimately feel good for you, but when you follow this rough guideline of the “57 rule” you’ll find the room feels more balanced, visually appealing, and harmonious. Good luck with all your wall art hanging’s!
